Good American-Chinese food. I've tried the Szechuan vegetables (meh: so-so), the Hunan tofu (good, but they sometimes have a heavy hand with the fermented black bean) and the veggie lo mein (phenomenal). The only problem for me with the Szechan vegetables was they were super salty and hard to taste anything but the chilis. I LOVE chilis and Szechuan peppercorn, but they were just over-emphasized here. The Hunan tofu comes with bamboo shoots, button mushrooms, water chestnuts, and broccoli. It's balanced nicely with a great kick, but like I said they can be a little heavy-handed with the fermented black bean. The lo mein, though - oh, wow. Noodles perfectly done, veggies like pea pods, onions, sprouts, carrot, baby corn perfectly crisp-tender, and WONDERFUL wok hay! Such a great smoky depth! You just don't get that everywhere.

This review and rating are mainly based on my experiences for Dim Sum on weekdays. I was very very hesitant when we decided to try this place for the very first time because of the mixed reviews, but we took the chance anyways. I have now been here at least 5-7 times for Dim Sum and every time it has been wonderful! Our favorite items to get are: fried pork potstickers (they are HUGE and so good), baby curried squid (love this so much), fried pork dumplings (sweet & meat, the guys love this stuff), shumai, shrimp & chives dumpling, beef meatballs, shrimp ball (warning: do not dip it in the red sauce-that stuff is fishy and just unpleasant), & shrimp rice roll. You must get the shumai and potstickers. Both have tasty and moist chunks of pork and shrimp and seasoned perfectly! Sometimes the sticky wrapped rice can be good, but other times it's just bland and not steamed long enough. The bean curd roll is okay here, but not great. I've only ordered off the Hong Kong Menu since the waitress steered me to it. She flat out said it was better food haha. I think she could tell I was not in the mood for American-Chinese that day. I got a Beef Fried Noodles with bok choy dish and this was yummy as well. There have been some mishaps here and there with Golden Wok, but overall, it is pretty darn good. I'd definitely say come here for dim sum on the weekdays for lunch with a few co-workers or friends! It does seem that they are better for dim sum on the weekdays than on weekends, which is kind of odd. Maybe it is because it is slower on weekdays and that they are able to take their time to make the food right and it seems fresher too.

This review is mainly for their dim sum. The craving for dim sum hit, and yelp helped me find this place as one of the only ones that seems to serve it. We went on a Friday evening, and you can order it a la carte off a separate menu. Very likely these items are pre-made and frozen, but they were still enjoyable. I liked that it was all cooked to order. They have pictures of every item with the name, so it was very easy to point out what we wanted as would normally happen with the steaming carts at traditional dim sum. We had the steamed bbq pork buns, crystal shrimp dumplings, taro cakes, shrimp in noodles, stuffed tofu rolls, congee with century egg, Singapore noodles, and sautéed sweet pea leaves. We knew we were taking leftovers home! The dim sum and veggies were good. Mostly tasty and not too fatty. The noodles and congee we probably wouldn't order again. They were kind of bland but better than being too salty and greasy. Service was good in the beginning but spotty later when we asked for more drinks and sauces. Overall, pleased there is a decent option for dim sum any time, but probably wouldn't come here for regular Chinese food.

Guess i'm yet another Californian trying asian food in the midwest... Ambiance: Clean with the stereotypical plethora of auspicious red and black. The staff was friendly and did well with my sub-par attempts at cantonese mixed with english. Food: We ordered the typical shumai, har-gao dumplings, and rolled rice noodles which were all solid. My other favorite dishes such as the bbq pork bun and its pastry-brother were both tasty. I was sad the fried chive bun wasn't that great with a thick skin and lackluster chive/shrimp filling. The sticky rice (lo mai gai) was also pretty what-evs with a general lack of filling, although it wasn't dry and flavorless like may other places i've been. Overall the food was pretty decent, especially considering it is the midwest. Nothing was dessicated from sitting out too long and all the staples were there and tasty. Some ancillary dishes had some issues but I just won't get those things next time. I would say this place probably is a 3-3.5 in terms of food but considering other asian places i've been in the midwest, this is one of the better ones for dim sum and warrants a visit.

Foods good usually I have had a few times where the food was for sure not fresh but average its good. Servers are pretty on top of things but tend to be a bit rude. Was offered a plate that's not on the menu once it was pretty good but not $20 good. There dim sum is good if you get it on the week day or in the morning of the weekends never get it weekend nights as its been sitting there since the morning and is gross.

I concur with the comments that say you'll get a surprised look when you're there for dim sum & you're of the Caucasian persuasion. Frequently we're the only Caucasians in the place which tells me they're not too bad. I've only been there for dim sum & I try to go on the weekends when they have the carts. The hostesses usually make a few suggestions & will happily bring something out if it's not on the cart. Make sure you get there early for the baked BBQ pork buns because they sell out quick. I've never had a bad experience with the food or the staff. My only regret is that I can't go as often as I'd like.

best dim sum experience. The chicken congee was so clean tasting and floral almost. It was a pleasant surprise. It was my first time trying the turnip cake, taro dumpling and they are now my favorites.

I experience pretty intense Asian cravings, aaaand I'm a total sucker for dim sum carts. A few weeks ago I needed a fix, and Golden Wok had been on my To Try list for awhile. I arrived at the restaurant on Saturday morning, about five minutes after they opened. In a world where there are a limited number of bbq buns, I'm not taking any chances. When the steamer baskets rolled up to our table, piping hot and giving me that come hither look, I was smitten. The only "problem" we encountered while eating was the ol' Eyes Are Bigger Than Your Stomach. After 5 baskets of various dumplings and desserts, my roommate practically had to roll me out of here. I *almost* passed on the free coffee and tea bar at Horrock's later on in the afternoon, I was that full. YEAH. THAT FULL. I'll definitely be back for more #baobrunch soon.

Lovely Dim Sum lunch but the items that were not on the metal carts were not hot enough. They should rotate the dishes more. Tasty food and the service was wonderful.

I do not plan to return. Although the service was very good, the food was not. Wonton soup was a single piece of folded noodle in thin beef broth with no visible meat. Their idea of fried rice in egg was undercooked rice in soy sauce heated up - no egg was visible. Ordered Hunan Triple and it was covered in a sticky, overly sweet sauce and the beef and chicken both tasted "old". Reminded me of "Kitchen Nightmares". Again the service was fine-this however is neither good Chinese nor Chinese-American cuisine.

Famous for its hot pot. But I guess most of local resident would not want to try and most of Chinese customer would not want to try twice. There are some reports and rumors from my friends about the poor hygiene condition. Try the Beijing duck, it is even better than Beijing express 2 miles away. Not bad service, free wifi, poor health condition. Average cooking skill. Recommended to try once or two if you like it.

I don't want to go into full detail on this one, but if you want food from here, order take out. Service here is awful, and the only reason they don't get 1 star is because the food aint' half bad. If only they could put it all together, you'd have a place worth checking out for sure. As such, they do not. I will say that they have a large Asian population that frequents this joint, which should tell you something about the authenticity of this place. Still, unless you have 1.5-2 hours to kill, just get the take out.

Came here for dim sum on a Saturday morning with some friends. As a California girl, I can say that this dim sum was fairly good. Better than I expected for the Midwest! My favorites were the Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce (cooked with just the right amount of crunch left in the stems), shu mai, and steamed shrimp dumpling. My favorite dim sum dish is rice rolls with shrimp, and these were unfortunately cold. The baked and steamed barbecue pork buns were good, too (it's really hard to mess up the filling). Although they brought the steam cart around, nothing was "steaming hot." I wonder if this was because we were some of the first customers and the items had been sitting out. I didn't try the chicken feet and egg tart, but according to my friends, they were tasty. Next time, I would like to try some of the fried items, like spring rolls and sesame balls, and stir fry noodle dishes. Service was attentive and friendly. The hot tea was good and refilled promptly when we asked for more. They have a menu with pictures and the names of the dishes to help you know what the dishes are. We didn't necessarily have to wait for the cart--our waiter was happy to get the dish for us. Overall, I would definitely come back. Total with tip was about $11 per person. Oh yes, and if you are one of those big groups... they have round tables with lazy susans, and they let us split up the bill on our credit cards.

Hello Michigan! I'm new to this area and had to check out the local asian cuisine. Coming from California, my expectations had to be tempered when judging Asian food in a land far away. On one of my first days in MI, I end up up Golden Wok for some take-out. I ordered some basics that are fairly common everywhere and should be able to find some consistency over. 1) Yang-Chow Fried Rice - This has always been my initial staple dish to judge an asian place by. It's easy to mix, has a multitude of flavors, and is generally easy to get right. - The biggest concern about Golden Wok's dish is that the rice was way overcooked. The mix of vegetables, shrimp, and meats were good and complimented each other nicely, however the overcooked rice ruined the dish. 2) Cashew Chicken - For some reason I decided to go with this dish, some nuts with chicken and celery. Can't be that bad right? - Overall, I would say if they cut down on the salt a bit, the dish would be wonderful. It was salty that I had to use a 4-to-1 (rice-to-chicken) ratio to eat a spoonful. Maybe my tastes are too different, but I think it's more likely overly salty food is the same everywhere... Maybe my expectations weren't lowered enough... Who knows. For better or worse, Golden Wok was the first place I reviewed in Michigan, and it got a solid 2-stars: "Meh! I've (definitely) experienced better". I will say that I have read this is one of the better dim sum places around East Lansing area, so I will eventually make it back here and give that a shot. Have a great day Michigan Yelpers!

If you live in the Lansing, Michigan area, this is pretty much the only legit dim sum place. Also, never go to dim sum alone because it's never worth it.

Came in on Sunday morning with a party of 11! To celebrate mom's birthday.. We were seated right away and our waitress was kind enough to take the cake and cupcakes to keep refrigerated in their kitchen until we were ready for it. We enjoyed hot, fresh and delicious dim sum dishes from their carts as well as put in orders for other dishes which came out promptly. As soon as they saw us finishing up our meal they brought out the cake and even added a candle to the cake, since I forgot it.. sang HBD with us for mom and quickly helped serve cake. Absolutely the best service I've experienced in a long long long time!!! Two thumbs up for Golden Wok!!! Keep it up!!!

Dim Sum for an early Saturday lunch.... Oh yes what a great time. This review is for dim sum only, not sure on its availability throughout the week. If you are intimidated by ordering something new because of language barriers or fear of making a fool of yourself, check this place out! The waitress comes by with a cart, tells you what it is, and you choose right then and there. Staff is helpful and friendly.

My review is for Golden Wok's dim sum. I live in south Lansing and have my own local Chinese restaurants that I frequent but on the weekends I go out of my way to come to Golden Wok for dim sum even though one of my regular places also offers it. As others have said, you get to look at what the women are pushing around in carts and point at what you want. I implore you to experiment! Any dish may become your favorite. You'll note that the restaurant attracts a predominately Asian customer base, which strikes me as a sign that Golden Wok is doing it right. I've had better dim sum in NYC and Calgary Canada but in Lansing Golden Wok is the best. As someone else said, Golden Wok is essentially two restaurants. For standard meals they have the Americanized crap and then they have the stuff the Asian people order. I have no idea what it is or what menu they get to look at but some day I may get brave and branch out to try some stuff. They usually have Chinese television playing in the smaller dining room with the sound off. Seems like a legit place.

This review is for the dim sum. I'm from Atlanta, so the dim sum is really not comparable. At least Golden Wok still served it on rolling push carts! The juicy steamed pork dumplings were definitely the frozen variety, the Wei-Chuan brand to be precise. They were not even steamed well, so all the juice was gone when it was served. The xiao chang fen was decent, but I wish the shrimp was fresher. The steamed spare ribs was also ok, except the meat could've been chopped cleaner and rinsed to get rid of the extra gunk. It was a bit difficult to eat with all the the bone shards. The only thing that I ordered that was good was the pork shu mai. All four shu mai were nice and fat, and the texture was just right. They were topped with some orange fish roe? I don't know, it added as much flavor as the usual carrot I see on other shu mai: none. Overall, I guess it was ok for the location it is in, but I still miss the dim sum back in Atlanta.

Had not been here for quite some time. We had always referred to it as 'the Chinese Car Wash' because the site was previously a car wash. We are not chinese food fanatics, but do know what we like and we have always had good food and service here. Today was no exception. My wife had two flavor chicken, and I had double deluxe (chicken & shrimp). Both were fresh and hot when served and very flavorful. Servings were large enough to take home for 2 more meals.

NEVER AGAIN.! before i moved to east Lansing a year ago i came here and enjoyed their shrimp fried rice, yesterday i thought maybe i should grab something to eat here since i have people coming over, i got here and asked for SHRIMP FRIED RICE for FIVE people. FRIED is the keyword in my order, anyways, i paid and got home, when i arrived all my friends came over and i put the food, i open the tray and there is STEAMED RICE with soy sauce on it... the rice was whiter than snow and had about 12 pieces of shrimp if i'm not mistaken, i was shocked and upset cause i'm fasting and wanted to enjoy something i like. i apologized to my friends and called golden wok to ask for a replacement. the lady answered and i told her what happened she said "this is how we do shrimp fried rice" i replied "its steamed rice not fried" so she goes "nothing i can do for you" my reply was "well you just lost a customer" she goes "its ok bye". and hung up on me. as a restaurant employee for years when a customer says you just lost me thats when we apologize because in a restaurant you wont get a new customer every week but a regular will return at least twice a month. i'm very upset and don't recommend them. if you do eat here please EXPLAIN to them what shrimp fried rice is before you order.

I'm not good at scathing reviews, but Golden Wok is bad. I'm talking really bad. The absolute, hands down, worst service I've ever had in my life. My party of four waited ten minutes to get a table before anyone from the restaurant let us know we needed to wait to be seated. Once we sat down, we waited another ten minutes for water. Then, we waited another fifteen minutes hoping, begging and wishing for a waiter/waitress/anyone to take our order. We must have been invisible. During our extended stay, we saw no more than three different employees clear off a handful tables and seat the people waiting anxiously at the front. Obviously, this place cares more about getting people seated and filling up their tables versus actually serving Chinese food. After thirty minutes we gave up and left the restaurant. Once we got outside we saw some lady scurry up to the table and start clearing it off to seat the next wave of hungry people. I guess if you want Golden Wok, get takeout, but I can't vouch for their food since the only thing I took away from this place was one of those Chinese place mats that tell you what animal you are based on your birthday. Let's hear it for the dragons!

As far as sweet and sour tofu goes, it was OK. I was pleased that it was explicitly on the menu, and that I did not need to substitute. The egg drop soup was not packing the yum factor, and it had some weird looking particles floating around. I like Gourmet Village better, but Golden Wok is an OK substitute.

When I first walked into the place, I had really high expectations... TVB was playing in the background and I thought this place would be the real deal... It still is the best Chinese restaurant I've been to so far in the Lansing area, but it still has a long way to go. The owners seem like really nice people, so I hope the best for them and will certainly try them again. FOOD (3 out of 5): My litmus test for Chinese restaurants is how much "wok hei" or wok heat can be tasted in the cooking. It's hard to describe, but you can definitely tell when something was cooked with intense heat and with vigorous movement by the cook. This is extremely hard to achieve, because intense heat without proper movement usually equals burnt food. My "test" dish is usually is Chow Fun- very simple, almost peasant food, but so hard to make to perfection. Without the proper "Wok hei", noodles simply clump together or the dish is soupy. In this instance, I ordered the XO Chow Fun which is a variation that includes chili and dried scallop. Unfortunately, what showed up on my plate did not actually contain XO sauce as I did not taste any dried scallop. Sadly, the noodles did stick together... DECOR (3 out of 5): Clean enough for a Chinese restaurant-- my standards are not that high. SERVICE (4 out of 5): The staff was very attentive and did a good job with tea pot refills.

Golden Wok is two restaurants, believe it or not. To outsiders, they are one of the many Chinese restaurants in town, serving up greasy and over-sauced Americanized Chinese food. But if you know its secret, Golden Wok is a wonderful place. Go during lunch and ask for the dim sum menu. If you don't look asian, they'll do a double-take, believe me. Dim Sum is basically a bunch of delicious small dishes that you can get, kind of a brunch. Most are wonderful little buns and rolls with different meats or veggie fillings. Some are cakes and dumplings. You choose any number of dishes and mark them off a sushi-style paper menu. Figure about 5 dishes for two people. My favorites are the Shrimp dumplings, the steamed bbq pork buns, and the rice rolls. Mmmm. The best is on the weekend, when Golden Wok serves dim sum in the traditional style, with ladies walking around serving the dishes off carts. You point at what you want, and they serve it up. Golden Wok is one of maybe 3 places in Lansing that you can get dim sum, and maybe the best. If you haven't tried dim sum, do. It's well worth the effort.

OMG this is probably one of the worst Chinese restaurants I have ever been to. My friend Adriana and I decided to go here for lunch one day and I think I ordered some standard chicken and veggie dish. I was thinking...mmmm, I'm at a Chinese restaurant, I think I'll have crab rangoon too. Guess what's scratched out on the menu? Crab rangoon. So I was somewhat disappointed already. The food took forever to be served and once we got our dishes, Adriana's came out just fine. Mine? They served my stir-fry with NO RICE. (and the dish clearly came with rice) I'm like wtf? This is a Chinese restaurant! You should have rice growing somewhere behind the counter or something? If you're out, just run across the street to the Asia Mart and grab some! I waited patiently for about 6 minutes to see if the waiter was going to bring my rice because his hands were full the first time but nooooooo....no rice for me. I grabbed the attention of the hostess and asked her could I get a bowl of rice since my waiter had forgotten it. She said sure and went up to the waiter and said something very disparaging in Chinese and smacked the waiter swiftly behind the head. Adriana and I cracked the HELL up - althought she spoke Chinese, it was clear that she said "You forgot the rice, asshole!" He quickly brings my rice out and by now my food was cold and tasteless, so the whole dining experience was a bust, except I'll give them an extra star for the comedy routine. Otherwise, I'd avoid it. Go to Rice Kitchen.

Above Average. Great atmosphere (okay, but bad location) for the window seats, the inside is spacious and clean. The food is good and the people are friendly. Ask for tea as you're considering ordering and they won't think twice. I'd go again with friends at lunch time.

Everyone here is really friendly. They have a wide variety of dishes. For the fried food, they are usually very good about keeping the oil at the right temperature so the food doesn't come out super greasy. I'm not so wild about their curry dishes--not enough spice for me. Delivery is exceptionally slow.

i like this place, the workers are extremely friendly and the food is pretty good they also have dim sum if you are into that, never tried it here but would expect it to be decent. lots of selection on the menu it seems like i went here with a bunch of koreans one time and we ate family style with the turn table thing, it was really fun

I've been here numerous times for dinner, and food has been largely pretty consistent; nothing amazing, but nothing terribly repulsive. Service, like others have mentioned, are really hit or miss. It really depends on who you get. If you value service, then this might not be the place for you, but yet again, at most Chinese establishments, service isn't a #1 priority. The last time I was here was for dim sum. It was Husband and I's first time trying out their dim sum. We don't live that far, but somehow, it took us quite some time to make it out here to try out their dim sum. The verdict? Not bad, really just A-OK. The standouts were the pork and mushroom tofu bean curd roll, pork dumplings (shao mai), fried shrimp balls. The pan-fried turnip radish cake (luo bo gao) was terrible, so don't order that. Dry and too stiff with no flavor, it tasted like you were eating chalk. I cringe just thinking about it. The shrimp dumplings (xia jiao) while good in size and filling, the outside skin was too thick and fell apart once you picked it up. There were also no bamboo shoots mixed in with the shrimp filling, so that made the taste of it have less dimension and texture. I'd be willing to try out their other dim sum options another time, but it's not something I'm rushing back for. It's a good place if you happen to be in the area.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
